Percussionist Jerome has always dabbled in the classical percussion realms but it wasn't until he discovered the latin side of percussion that he found his vibe. He started playing congas to assist in his teaching and later got into greater depth when he learned that it was opening up his drumset playing. He started taking lessons with one of Hawaii's most well known percussionists, Sango and in the year 2000, he found himself in Cuba studying at the E.N.A (Esquela Nacional de Arte) in Havana, Cuba with master percussionists Vizcayuno and Enrique Pla of Irakere fame. Jerome began playing congas, timbales, djembe, bells and other various percussion 'toys' and also mixing drumset and congas at the same time. He used these instruments in salsa groups, drum ensembles, clubs, recitals throughout Hawaii. His creative side was becoming heavily influenced by his latin sound and his personal projects began to be taken in this direction. "When I came to New York I become interested in dancing and realized that playing drums was another form of dancing." Jerome is current a percussionist/dancer/performer with "Body Temple", as holistic performance group, and assisted Maya Hebert, a local shaman artist with a class they lead together called "Shamanic Dancing". Ceremonious drumming and chanting is becoming a huge part of Jerome and he is incorporating that into his current creative outlets. |
